Footprints

Building Footprints

REPRINT FROM THE INTEGRAL NEWSLETTER

Building layouts, commonly called “footprints” don’t really change over the years, but the building codes and quality of construction may. An example below is the comparison between a home built in 1985 which had the carport converted to living space with a front porch and a new build of almost 25 years later. Although this comparison is technically a rebuild after a fire, some call this tweaking the footprint because the new or updated plans were also used in a new subdivision down the street.

The owners did ask for changes and/or upgrades, but it is the building code and the municipality that changed the quality of construction. Due to obsolescence, the Principle of Substitution, also came into play. The home was knocked down and rebuilt from the ground up.
